You just gotta love Ralph channelling his inner teenager
Yesterday afternoon 2.40 pm while I was busy in the office my mobile rang, a Johannesburg no. appeared on my screen and I answered. A lady, whose first language was not English wanted to know how I was. I asked who was calling and she said she was calling on behalf of Edgars and could she take a few minutes to tell me about some special offer. I said no, it is not a good time as I am busy.
At 4.21 pm she started calling again, by them I was busy in the kitchen so I did not answer but responded with a text saying that I was busy. Between then and 5.31 she called again 5 times, each time I responded with a text saying that I was busy except for the last call because by then my patience has run its course and I just cut the call then blocked all further calls from that number. She might have called again and again yesterday but at least I was not being bothered.
This morning at 8.45 am the calls started again but from a different Johannesburg number. At that point Ozzy, Milo and I were having our all important bonding session so I cut the call. I assume that she then called my office and home lines in quick succession none of which I answered.
At 10.46 she called again, I answered and told her that I was not interested in whatever it is she is trying to sell me and to please stop calling me.
Does Edgars really condone harassing their customers to this extent? This experience has put me off Edgars even more, their shops have nothing I want to buy, there is never anyone to assist you, should you find something you might like you have to stand in a forever queue to try it on and then another forever queue to pay for it. Their customer service SUCKS!
Not going back to Edgars – EVER!
This is too good not to share. I hope my overseas readers will enjoy a little insight into the South African vernacular
How do you explain the word “sommer” to an Australian or an Engelsman or to anyone else, for that matter. It’s not only a foreign word, it’s a foreign concept.
Perhaps the English never do anything “just sommer”.
But when you’ve explained it, it’s been adopted enthusiastically. Although there’s no Australian equivalent either, they sommer take to the idea.
“Why are you laughing? Just sommer”.
My best explanation of “just sommer” would be “just because” with no further explanation required.
“Bakkie” is another one of those useful “portmanteau” words (see – English doesn’t have a word for that, either) very useful around the house, for all sizes and shapes of containers and dishes.
Also used for what they call “utes” in OZ. Our pick-up trucks are called “bakkies” because the load area on the back is of course just another “bakkie” (container)
I find it an indispensable word.
We all know “voetstoets” of course. It’s been officially adopted into South African English. There’s no concise, one-word equivalent in English. “As is” just doesn’t hack it. And it’s such a humorous word, conjuring up images of pushing that brand new car home…
There’s no good English word for “dwaal”. It doesn’t mean dream, or daze. It’s close to absent-mindedness, but that’s not quite it. Being in one so often myself, I’m not likely to stop using it.
My head is often in a “dwaal“
I think “gogga” is the most delightful word for insect I’ve ever heard. Children all over the world should use it. “Insect” just doesn’t stand a chance.
And I think “moffie” is a far better word than all those embarrassed English attempts at defining a homosexual: gay, queer, poofter, etc. aren’t half as expressive. Somehow “moffie” doesn’t sound as derogatory either.
And then there’s “gatvol”. OK, I know it’s very rude. But it’s so very expressive, NE? “Fed up” doesn’t have half the impact. No it doesn’t –Gatvol is at least another 10 degrees past “fed-up”! It’s like Blancmange in comparison.
“Gatvol” is a word used more frequently than ever in the workplace these days, with increasing intensity.
While we’re on the subject, another phrase which outstrips any English attempt is “Hy sal sy gat sien”.(Also rude). “He’ll get his come-uppance” is like milquetoast in comparison. It definitely lacks the relish.“Donder” is another very useful word, used as an all-purpose swearword, which again has no good English translation. Used as a verb, it can express any degree of roughing up. As a noun, it is a pejorative, as they politely say in dictionaries, to mean whatever you want it to mean.
And there’s no good translation for “skiet-en-donder” either. Cowboy movies could be considered “skiet-en-donder” films
It says something about the English that they have no word for”jol”.
Probably the dictionary compilers regard it as slang, but it’s widely used for “Going out on the town, kicking up your heels, enjoying yourself…” Not just getting PISSED out of your Skull. (See, there’s no English translation) Although curiously, the word “Yule” in Yuletide is related to “jol” and derived from Old English. So somewhere along the line, the English forgot how to “jol”.
I’ve yet to meet a South African over the age of two who doesn’t use the word “muti”. Translation is impossible – “witches potion” is about the nearest I can get. It needs a long cultural historical explanation. Between “muti” and the pedantic “medication”, there’s simply no contest.
And of course, my personal favourite”Kak en betaal”, which just says it all, doesn’t it? A bland and effete English translation would be “Cough and pay”, or “Breathe and pay”. Or one could say “Poop and Pay” but that does not convey the correct sense of outrage when one is overcharged for something that is in effect a necessity. But it just doesn’t cut it, does it? Not by a long drop.
How do you explain the passion of”LEKKER!”? Wow last night was a “lekker jol”
“Dudu or doeks”. Telling your infant to go to bed is just not the same as: ”Go dudu now my baby!”
How about’bliksem”- I’m going to bliksem you or ek gaan jou donder!
Both wonderful Afrikaans expressions with nothing to compare in the English language, at least nothing that gives the same satisfaction.
“Trapsuutjies”………..the way certain maids and others work. Slowcoach just doesn’t do it, hey
“Mielie pap”- there is no other word like pap, … the English have porridge, and when they say porridge, they mean oats. There’s no Maltabela, no Tasty Wheat, no Creamy Meal, no Putu pap. In other words, there’s no pap!
“Mislik”- such a ‘lekker’ word, and one that my kids are familiar with. ‘Why are you so mislik, you little skelm? (rascal would be the nearest translation when addressing children in this way but the prisons of full of adult “skelms”)(Mislik is a good description of a whining kid that does not know what he or she wants)
Do you want a ”snot-klap”?’(One that would make your nose run!)
And then there is “moer” which can be used as an adjective or a verb. As in “I had a moer of a good time last night” or “Do that again and I’ll sommer moer you”.
Ja-well-no-fine – have a good week blogpeeps
I am so behind with my blogging, and I am trying to catch up with your posts, comment and get also do a post of my own, so here goes.
This is the view we are waking up to at the moment (when the sun shines that is)
We are at our holiday house, came up on Monday and enjoyed a gorgeous drive through the Overberg countryside. We drove in bright sunshine in spite of waking up to heavy rain that morning. The newly planted fields are lush green and picture perfect.
Tuesday was a stunning day although we had very heavy mist to start off with it quickly warmed up.
I am working from here and have to keep a check on my data bundle so that I don’t end up having to pay extra. It does not help that the connection is very slow and OH and I cannot both access it at the same time otherwise we will both become dizzy watching spinning circles trying to load sites.
OH replaced the corroded LNB on the satellite dish but we still cannot get DSTV reception. We spent about 45 minutes on the phone with DSTV Customer Service and another 30 minutes with our son to no avail. Fortunately I can still view the recorded programmes on the PVR if I unplug the cable from the dish and there is a lot to watch, but no Sky News which is tough for OH.
Ozzy and Milo absolutely love it here, they have more space to run around and of course enjoy our company 24/7. Here they are in their new matching beds catching some sun on the verandah.
And here they are again in each other’s beds. This is becoming a real problem. We bought them both new beds because Milo was always in Ozzy’s bed and we put it down to Milo having outgrown his puppy bed. But he still gets into Ozzy’s bed and Ozzy has now started taking over Milo’s much smaller bed.
Unfortunately after a glorious start to the day the weather appears to be changing and we hear that we are in for two days rain. If all goes well we plan to stay here until next Sunday which gives OH lots of time for DIY and maintenance which is ongoing.
It is so peaceful here out of season, the most noise we hear is from the birds. I hope to photograph some of them but my skill as a photographer is not that good or perhaps it’s my lack of patience.
Being unable to get online yesterday to post this it is now Saturday and the cold front has made its arrival known – it is cold (11 deg) and windy. The rain did not come yesterday as predicted so I am glad that we made the most of yesterday’s sunshine and got out on the boat for a trip up the river. This time of year it is very quiet as there are very few permanent residents. The lack of wind meant the water was like glass mirroring the reflection of the houses and hills in almost perfect clarity. I don’t understand why people think that this is not a good time of year to be here, in my view it is the best. Mostly warm days and no wind make for a very pleasant climate. The chilly nights are easily taken care of with a log fire, but hey for now it’s our secret – OK!
Reflections and perfect peace on the river
Ozzy and Milo take everything in while on the boat
Yesterday afternoon we went to visit friends on a farm nearby. They have just had a baby and I spent an hour or so cradling and feeding a 5 week old baby girl who is absolutely gorgeous. We had a bit of a walk around the farm and visited the milking shed and the pigs and piglets. Farming is such hard and intensive work, I have great respect for those that chose this way of life, there are definitely easier ways to make money.
This mommy pig was very protective of her piglets and shoed them away so I could not take photos of the cute little things.
And lastly there were the baby lambs
That’s all from me for now, I will try and do another post but it will depend very much on how much of my data bundle remains. Doing this post took the best part of an hour as the connection is very slow.
For those bloggers in the Western Cape please keep warm and dry this wintery weekend.
The Birthday Boy
Very belated update – I got my meeting with the Chairman and resolved some issues relating to my billing but some important ones still remain unresolved. I am still not going to sign anything until I am happy that I have negotiated the best possible outcome from a bad situation.
In another meeting during last week it became apparent to me that locally there is a great deal of unhappiness and dissatisfaction with the head office and their performance which is well below what is expected of them.
So I will bide my time and if and when another door opens I might well decide to close this one, but I am not so stressed anymore. At the end of the day what goes around comes around …
Last week was back-to-back meetings, some of them quite heated so I did not get an opportunity to blog at all. Also my internet connection is so damn slow at the moment that it takes all my time and patience to do what has to be done work wise and blogging does not get much of a look-in. I don’t know if the problem is with my router that has to be rebooted on average about 4 times per day or with my computer which loses the wireless connection for no reason and has to be rebooted as well. The problem is that while waiting for something to load I start doing something else and then clean forget to go back and finish what I was trying to do originally.
We had a lovely day yesterday with our son and DIL celebrating Milo’s first birthday. Both dogs got chew treats while we enjoyed a delicious roast lamb lunch and then we sat outside in the sun and watched Ozzy and Milo have some fun with a new toy from son and DIL.
That’s my treat Dad!
Gotta keep my ball safe while I enjoy my treat
This strange ball is very difficult to get my teeth into but very easy on my jowls!
Hello Bloggers
I don’t really have anything to blog about. My mind is still occupied with the uncertainty of my work situation and the incompetent and plainly disrespectful way it has been handled.
I have requested a meeting with the Chairman on Monday but have not had a response yet. He did not call me back last Friday after I left a message for him which I followed up with an email. I have heard nothing more even though he replied to the email and said he would get back to me. This state of affairs just cannot continue and I intend to turn up the heat because I have been patient long enough.
If it were possible to walk away without seriously damaging our financial security I would do so in a heartbeat. I am starting to think that our retirement/downscaling plans will need to be brought forward but I hoping that that I can hold on to the end of next year. There are things that we want to do and accomplish before selling up and moving to the country and there are contingency plans that are not yet in place that would give us a greater degree of security when we make the move.
When I am stressed as I am now I tend to withdraw from life, I don’t find it easy to go out and be sociable. I am so afraid of spending any money that is not strictly necessary that we are not doing the things we would normally do. Add to that severe pain from out of control IBS and sleep deprivation. Last weekend I did not leave the house at all. I realise that my world has shrunk, hence not having anything of interest to blog about.
I feel responsible for messing up OH’s retirement, this is not the life he expected after retirement, it’s not what we had planned.
Sorry for the negative post but I’m so not in a good space right now.
Sorry I can’t get the video to load here, please click on the link above.
I’m no fan of Justin Bieber but this parody on the Gupta scandal is so topical and clever.
I suppose it’s only a matter of time before Nando’s capitalises on the story too.
For overseas bloggers the Guptas are a very rich and influencial family with links too close for comfort to our state president and the ruling party. They landed their private jets at a military airbase, with or without permission – that still needs to be established, and drove their guests in a flashing blue light motorcade to a wedding at a well known gambling resort where some of the guests allegedly misbehaved and they were waited on by mainly “white” staff by arrangement.
I am still catching up on the story so apologies to any bloggers who are better informed if I have got some of the story wrong.
So the draft service provider agreement I prepared basically got accepted except for one very crucial section. And that is not in the spirit of what was conveyed to me verbally in the meeting so right now I am very confused.
Confused about who I am meant to be negotiating with because that has changed
Confused about why something that has always been very simply handled now has to become over complicated and impractical
Confused about whether they actually want to retain my services considering how I have been treated
Confused that my call to the person I am supposed to be dealing with has not been returned.
And most of all confused and just a touch pissed off that they contacted another client of mine to find out how I was billing and being paid.
Is that enough to be paranoid about?
Is the writing on the wall and I am just too blind to see it?
Just wondering …
